All she ever wanted was a chance to settle down in one place.

Thistle Nettlebottom knows her life isn't exactly normal. She travels the country with her secretive mother and bestselling author grandmother in a pink RV going from book signings to crazy research trips. She's never been to public school or had a boyfriend, but she can pick a lock and hotwire a car. One day the phone rings and they set a course to a tiny town that's not on any maps. Suddenly, Thistle finds her whole life changing.

She's finally found the home she's been searching for.

Thistle soon realizes that Desire isn't like other towns and she's not like other girls. The family she trusted has lied to her about everything her entire life and the things she doesn't know about herself could cost her everything. Her legacy as one of the most powerful witches the town has ever seen has made her enemies that have been waiting patiently for a chance to destroy her. Thistle needs to learn to use her powers to protect herself before they succeed.

Be careful what you wish for.

Thistle has a power unique even among the magic wielding witches of Desire. She can wish things into existence. At first she enjoys the freedom of having everything her heart desires, but she soon realizes that her power comes at a terrible price. She's losing her grip on her sanity at a time when she can't afford any weakness. Her enemies are closing in quickly, but she might not have the strength to save herself.

I think this novel should not be labeled Young Adult. Sexual scenes include details about "erection" and a girl straddling a boy. The relationship between sexual partnering and status is not a concept age appropriate for early teenagers. Adulterous relationships and a classical notion of "bastard" are all concepts invoked, as well as sex between family members. Involuntary sex under the influence of magic compulsion is rape in my book, and it happens several times. The combination of all of these factors makes me think the book is better targeted at adults rather than teens. Only the age of the protagonist makes this a Young Adult book at all. Violence is limited but graphic. -- The book is fantastic. The main character starts out ignorant of the soap opera challenges of life in Desire, where old jealousies and alliances hide behind the most casual of contacts. Thistle slowly figures out her role in town. This device allows the author to enter the story with all of the challenges in place, the reader learning about the magic, the conflicts and opportunities along with Thistle. Roger Zelazny used the same technique in Nine Princes in Amber where Corwin slowly learns who his friends, enemies and family are. --

I Wish The Witches of Desire Book 1 edition by Wren Emerson Children eBooks Reviews

I had downloaded this book quite some time ago and forgot that it was a Young Adult book- Surprised- but in a good way. I thought that the story was smartly executed when one considers the target audience. Although there are elements of sexuality, adults who have little patience for YA books should take a pass on this one... while the characters have a certain level of maturity there is a teen quality to the dialogue and actions of some of the characters. Thistle (our main girl) makes up for it though. That being said I really enjoyed the original elements of the plot... while some thought it was slow, I enjoyed the pace and thought that the author did a splendid job of setting up the town, the major characters, and the foreshadowing of events that makes you want to continue onward in the series. Kudos! The one really negative was the ending... it was absolutely abrupt! WOW - I was completely flummoxed about whether my device downloaded the who thing but then I noticed that others had the same complaint. Be prepared for little to no resolution and just a complete stop. Review would have been a 4 otherwise. Not usually a YA reader... but I am intregued about the next installment and will most likely download the book.
I liked the main character. I liked the concept. The writing was fairly good with a couple of nits, "blindfold" is one word, so is "headboard", there was another one of these, but I can't remember what it was.

The main character sure throws up a lot.

I was a bit skeptical about this book, mostly because of the cover. I was kind of expecting a sort of fairy/fae kind of thing. After reading the book, I would say that the cover doesn't fit the story. If the lady on the cover is supposed to represent the main character, nowhere in the book does she dress anything like that, and she's only 17, the lady on the cover looks older.

The "climax" of the book, where various truths are revealed, feels a bit contrived and stiff. I think the author might have done better to allow some of those truths to appear earlier in the book, rather than dumping them by the truckload all at once, and perhaps used something else for a climax.

The ending of the book seemed very abrupt, I was not expecting it at all, and it was kind of a letdown. Indeed both the climax and the ending seemed to me as if the author was getting impatient to finish writing the book and just sort of threw things together at the last minute. For me, it really threw off the pacing.

Nevertheless, the character and the basic plot concept are strong in my opinion, and worth further exploration by the writer (and readers). However, I do not feel that the book is worth $4.99 asking price. I feel it would be more appropriate as a .99 cent read.
I purchased this book when it debuted mainly due to the enthusiastic tweets of its proud author. Reading the synopsis on , it peaked my interest. The story revolves around Thistle Nettlebottom, a bored 17-year-old who has spent most of her life living out of a pink RV following her famous grandmother from one book signing to another. Her whole life to date has been that RV, her mother, & their driver Shep. A situation that abruptly changes with a single phone call. Suddenly, they are on their way to see a dying relative. Her whole life as she discovers was a well planned illusion, one created to protect her from herself and the people of the quiet town of Desire.

Upon their arrival Thistle learns her true identity and meets the picturesque town of Desire, peaceful & beautiful, it holds a deadly secret that she will soon learn. Thistle as she soon discovers is a powerful witch with a unique power, the power to wish.

I found the story well written & fast paced. The beginning is a bit slow, but the tempo picks up quickly. The author does a good job creating the world of Desire, and the characters within. She does an excellent job recreating the complexities of social order of both the high school students and the towns people who rule it.

My only complaints with the story are minor, I thought the application of the magic could have been a bit better portrayed and the ending left me feeling like it was a contradiction, but then again, having raised 3 daughters of my own, a "contradiction" is sometimes a perfect description of a 17-year-old. I highly recommend this book, I intend to pass it on to my grand daughters to read.
